Instructions
Add a beading needle to an arm-length of FireLine® thread. Leaving an 8-inch tail, use the following #8 seed beads to create a length of ladder stitch.
Pass through the first and last beads twice, pulling tight to create a circle. Tie a surgeon's knot. If needed, pass the needle through beads to be exiting a sour apple.
Use the spiral herringbone stitch to create a beaded rope.
Tip: For more information, view our "Spiral Herringbone Stitch" how-to video and illustrated instructions.
Add one more row, adding only one of each color to taper the rope. Pass through the last row again then tie a small knot. Do not trim the thread.
Add a beading needle to an arm-length of FireLine thread. Pick up an even number of #11 sour apple, enough to go around the top of a bear claw focal.
Pass through all the beads again, pull tight to create a circle, then tie a surgeon's knot.
Add the following rows of #11 seed beads using tubular peyote stitch:
Note: Skip adding beads as needed to accommodate the taper of the bear claw.
Add a row of sour apple with the tubular peyote stitch, passing through the next three beads after each pick up.
Pass through various beads to exit a sour apple in the first row.
Using even count peyote stitch, add one sour apple, one black diamond and one terra cotta. Repeat to create a beaded strip approximately 1-1/2 inches long.
Insert the bear claw focal into the tubular peyote. Loop the end of the beaded strip over the top of the claw to the other side of the tubular peyote. Sew through the top row of tubular peyote and the last row of the beaded strip.
Weave through various beads to secure the thread then trim.
String the claw focal onto the beaded rope.
Cut two 3-inch lengths of wire. Create a wrapped loop on one end of each piece of wire.
Pass the beading needle on the end of the beaded rope through the wrapped loop on a length of wire. Pass through the last row again. Repeat to stitch the loop onto the end of the beaded rope. Tie a small knot and trim. If desired, add a small amount of adhesive to the knot for additional security.
String a cone and a 3mm round onto the wire then create a wrapped loop.
Use a jump ring to add half a toggle clasp to the end of the necklace.
Add a beading needle to the tail thread of the beaded rope. Stitch one row of three beads and tie a small knot. Repeat Steps 13 - 15 to complete the necklace.
