Follow along as in-house jewelry designer Rose demonstrates how to create the Russian spiral stitch. It's easier than ever to add this swirling stitch to your jewelry lines with the help of this video and a few materials!
Instructions
Note: The illustrations were created with size 8 (color A bead) and size 11 color (B bead) rocailles. Any combination of two bead sizes can be used to create this spiral, so long as the larger bead is color A.
Cut a 3-foot length of stringing material.
Thread a beading needle, leaving a tail.
Pick up three groups of one color A bead and two color B beads. Move the beads to the end of the thread, leaving a 6 -inch tail.
Note: The diameter of the finished weave can be altered by starting with more groups of seed beads on the first row.
Pass through all the beads again, pull tight to create a circle, then create a knot.
Pass through the next color A and color B, exiting between two color Bs.
Pick up one A bead and two B beads. Skip over the next two beads of the first row and pass through the third (a color B).
Repeat.
Repeat Step 5, pulling tightly after each stitch, until the Russian spiral reaches the desired length.
The weave will begin to cup and then become a tube as length is added.
Pass through all the beads in the last row to secure the thread. For additional security add a knot.
Add a beading needle to the tail from Step 2, then repeat to secure the thread.
