Pass one 8mm jump ring through two 5mm jump rings then close. Repeat to add a second 8mm jump ring, creating a 2-2 chain.
Attach two more 5mm jump rings to the previous 5mm jump rings, creating a 2-2-2 chain with the 8mm jump rings at the bottom.
Take the top two 5mm jump rings and flip them down on either side of the 8mm jump rings then spread the center two 5mm jump rings apart like bunny ears.
Pass two more 5mm jump rings through the center two 5mm jump rings, in between the bunny ears, then close. This is your first set of locking rings and will be the beginning of a second set of 2-2-2 chain.
Add two more sets of two jump rings, creating a second set of 2-2-2 chain. Flip the top two jump rings down to the center then spread the two top jump rings. Attach a set of two locking jump rings.
This completes the first full segment of byzantine chainmaille.
Tip: For more information, view our ''How to Start a Byzantine Chainmaille Weave'' how-to video.
To continue the weave, add two more sets of 5mm jump rings, flip the last two down and spread the middle jump rings apart like bunny ears then repeat Step 3 until you create a length of byzantine chainmaille approximately 12 inches long. Finish the chainmaille weave by using two 8mm jump rings as the locking rings.
Repeat Steps 1 - 4 using 8mm jump rings as the base and 7mm jump rings for the pattern, creating a length of byzantine chainmaille 4 inches long.
Note: This length of chainmaille should have five full segments of byzantine in the center with two half segments on each end.
Pass two 7mm jump rings through the center link of one segment of 7mm byzantine. Use those two jump rings as a base for creating a half segment of byzantine.
Pass one 7mm jump ring through one blue scale, one purple scale, one green scale and the bottom two jump rings of the half segment of byzantine then close.
Repeat Step 6 four more times to create byzantine chainmaille with scale drops centered on the remining four segments of 7mm byzantine chainmaille.
Connect the 8mm jump rings using self-closing clasps as seen in the design image.
Following the byzantine pattern in the necklace, create one full segment of 5mm byzantine chainmaille, using only a single jump ring for the second locking ring.
Attach an ear wire to the top locking jump ring.
Pass one 7mm jump ring through one of each size of scale component and the bottom two 5mm jump rings of the byzantine chainmaille then close.
Repeat Steps 1 - 3 to create a second earring.
