How to Use the Artistic Wire® Wire Knitter

Instructions

Step 1

Thread the end of your wire down through the hole in the center of the tool.

Step 2

Pull the wire down about 5 inches.

Step 3

Bend the wire up and hold it against the side of the tool with your left hand. It is helpful to think of the spokes as the face of a clock. While holding the wire in your right hand, start to the left of the 6:00 spoke and wrap the wire around the spoke counter-clockwise.

Bring the wire to the top of the 8:00 spoke.

Step 5

Wrap the wire counter-clockwise around the 8:00 spoke, and to the right of the 10:00 spoke.

Step 6

Wrap the wire counter-clockwise around the 10:00 spoke, and bring it down underneath the 12:00 spoke.

Step 7

Continue the pattern to wrap the wire around the 12:00 and 2:00 spokes, and bring the wire to the left of the 4:00 spoke.

Step 8

Continue wrapping the wire counter-clockwise around the 4:00 spoke and bring it to the top of the 6:00 spoke where you first began wrapping. You will now wrap the wire around the pegs again.

Step 9

Starting with the 6:00 spoke, wrap the wire counter-clockwise and up to the 8:00 spoke. Wrap again around the 8:00 spoke and up to the 10:00 spoke.

Step 10

Continue the pattern to wrap around each of the spokes.

Step 11

After your last wrap, you should have 2 full wraps on each spoke. Hold the wire down to the left of the 4:00 spoke with your thumb.

Step 12

Insert a Beading Awl or hook under the bottom of the first double wrap on the 6:00 spoke.

Step 13

Hook pulling bottom loop over the top loop

Use the beading awl to pull the bottom loop up over the top loop and over the top of the spoke. Working clockwise, do this for each loop around the circle.

Step 14

After each full revolution, give the bottom wire a gentle tug to tighten the stitch and maintain the shape of the knitted rope.

Step 15

Repeat steps 9-14 until your knitted rope is the desired length. After several stitches, your knitted rope will emerge from the bottom of the tool. Tip: Use Kumihimo/Knittter Weights to keep even tension on your design while working on your project.
