Hematite History

The Romans used it in protective amulets, often worn on armor. Early Britons believed it warded off Viking attacks, and Victorians prized its dark sheen as a mourning stone. In the Art Deco era, its sleek lines and shine made it a standout material for striking designs.


Hematite’s unique properties make it incredibly versatile. Its density makes it ideal as ballast for ships, while its ability to block X-rays sees it frequently used in medical and radiation equipment. Hematite is also a key ingredient in rouge powder for polishing brass and in other abrasives. Hematite Geological Properties


Hematite is the world’s primary source of iron and an incredibly versatile mineral, capable of forming in all three major rock types: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. In sedimentary rocks, hematite often forms through the precipitation of iron-rich fluids, creating deposits in places like lake beds or ancient seafloors. Within metamorphic rocks, it develops as a result of high pressure and temperature, transforming iron-rich minerals into new formations. In igneous rocks, hematite may appear as a result of volcanic activity, crystallizing from iron-laden magmas.


Its appearance varies widely, making identification challenging. Hematite ranges from metallic and smooth to flaky, with colors spanning silver, black, red and brown. It can occur in forms as diverse as spherical concretions, thin layers or slab-like structures. This adaptability in formation and appearance reflects its geological diversity and importance.


Hemalyke™ is a synthetic material designed to resemble hematite, and it is often mistakenly identified as the real mineral. While it’s always ideal to have a professional assess stones for authenticity, a key difference lies in their magnetic properties. Natural hematite is only mildly magnetic, whereas Hemalyke has a much stronger magnetic attraction due to its manmade composition.
