Viewed as a “stone of courage,” dragon blood jasper is a variety of chalcedony (micro-crystalline quartz) that displays flecks and veins of red within an opaque green background. Major deposits are mined in South Africa, with some material coming from Western Australia.
Also called Dragon Stone, Dragon Blood Stone and Dragon Jasper, this stone is steeped in myth and lore, holding a unique significance in ancient cultures. Many ancient Aboriginal tales attribute its origin to the remains of mythical dragons. In these societies, the stone's association with dragons—a symbol of power and vitality—elevates its importance. The energy believed to be locked within this stone (referred to as "kundalini" in Sanskrit), is a potent force likened to the legendary energy of dragons themselves.
Metaphysically, dragon blood jasper is an intensely healing stone, promoting courage, strength and vitality, while also supporting centeredness and grounding. This stone helps to balance and integrate mind, body and spirit. It is said to stimulate creativity, attract money and love and help you to achieve your goals. With its green and red coloring, it connects directly to the Heart Chakra, helping you to open and hear your heart, and it encourages love and inspires compassion and forgiveness. Dragon blood jasper's blend of earthy green and red is also thought to encourage the best possible combination of love and passion.
Associated with the element of fire and the Western zodiac sign Leo, dragon blood jasper is thought to give the wearer courage to face difficulties head-on, with honesty, determination, creativity and practicality.
Dragon blood jasper's reptilian green shades often come from epidote, whereas the red shades are usually attributed to piemontite, but can also occur due to the presence of red jasper.
Like many gemstones in the quartz/chalcedony group, dragon blood jasper is fairly hard and relatively durable. Clean it with warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners. Wipe dry with a soft cloth before storing or putting away.

Add a little "rawr!" to your designs with this epic gemstone. The earthy greens and reds are ideal for men's and unisex jewelry and for women who want something subtle yet powerful. Pairing it with antiqued metals gives an ancient talisman vibe, although this stone looks fantastic in any style. Combine it with other earth-toned gemstones for a natural, grounded look, such as red jasper, red tigereye or chrysanthemum stone. Play up the reds with fiery carnelian, scintillating sunstone or regal ruby. Highlight the red-and-green color-scheme with similar gemstones like ruby zoisite, unakite or bloodstone. And of course, dragon-themed charms, focals and findings are always appropriate!
